Landmark Research

The Indian Brain Template

For decades, psychiatric diagnoses in India were made using brain scan reference data from European and Chinese populations. Dr. Achalia's research changed that forever.

01

The Discovery

Brain scans of Indian, European, and Chinese patients revealed that the Indian brain is structurally distinct — smaller in volume, but with greater internal diversity. Using NIMHANS' 130 GB supercomputer, the team processed data from hundreds of patients across three continents.

02

The Impact

Published in the American Psychiatric Research Neuroimaging Journal, the research means psychiatric diagnoses for Indian patients can now be compared against accurate Indian-brain reference data — improving diagnostic accuracy significantly.

03

National Adoption

The National Brain Research Centre in Haryana announced plans to develop a new nationwide prototype across 29 states based on Dr. Achalia's foundational research — a historic recognition of the work's national importance.

🧠EuropeanLarger volume, uniform reference standard
🧠IndianUnique structure — now has its own template
🧠ChineseDistinct from Indian brain morphology

Building on the Indian Brain Template, Dr. Achalia's team demonstrated that combining neuro-imaging (fMRI, structural MRI) with artificial intelligence can raise psychiatric diagnostic accuracy from 60% to 87.5% — a transformative advance for patients with bipolar disorder and other complex conditions.

FIGURE-8 TMS COIL

rTMS — A New Hope for Treatment-Resistant Depression

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) is a non-invasive, drug-free neuromodulation therapy that uses gentle magnetic pulses to stimulate underactive areas of the brain involved in depression, OCD, anxiety and chronic pain. Achalia Neuropsychiatry Clinic was among the first in Marathwada to introduce clinically-validated rTMS protocols.

Our facility is also equipped with a deep TMS coil in addition to the standard figure-8 coil — used here for OCD and for post-stroke motor & cognitive rehabilitation. The deep coil reaches further into the cortex than the figure-8, broadening the therapeutic window for resistant cases.

taVNS AURICULAR VAGUS NERVE STIMULATION

TaVNS — Vagus Nerve Stimulation, Through the Ear

Transcutaneous Auricular Vagus Nerve Stimulation (TaVNS) is a non-invasive form of vagus nerve stimulation delivered through a small electrode placed on the outer ear. The auricular branch of the vagus nerve runs just beneath the skin of the cymba conchae and tragus — gentle electrical pulses stimulate it without surgery, without medication, and without sedation. Achalia Neuropsychiatry Clinic is among the very few centres in Marathwada offering TaVNS as part of routine clinical care.

Not necessarily. We follow evidence-based protocols and prescribe medication only when clinically indicated. Many patients benefit from psychotherapy, counselling, neuromodulation (rTMS / Neurofeedback) or lifestyle interventions either alone or alongside medication.

rTMS is non-invasive and well tolerated. Most patients experience only a mild tapping sensation on the scalp during sessions. There are no systemic side effects, no anaesthesia, and you can resume normal activities immediately afterwards. It is FDA and CE approved.
